Independent Photography in the South East are a group who have now been exhibiting work together every second year for 25 years. Venues have extended from the coast, such as Brighton and Worthing, up to Horsham and Crawley. Their original inspiration for starting the group was Paul Hill OBE, a photographer who ran workshops at his ‘Photographers’ Place’ in Derby. Jill Staples, and other enthusiastic participants, started running workshops here in the south east, closer to home, where notable photographers such as John Blakemore, Fay Godwin, Mark Power and Jem Southam showed the group their work and supported them in creative ideas of their own. Their images and styles are as diverse as our own – still-life, landscape, architectural, street photography, portraits and abstract are some of the genres represented in this exhibition. However, our curator Mick Williamson, a senior lecturer at London Metropolitan, will be pulling all the work together with his brilliant expertize, to produce a show that will be very different and thought-provoking, as well as beautifully hung.
